[DMANET] Intensive School on Cellular Automata @ACRI 2018

Intensive School on Cellular Automata

Co-located with the 13th International Conference on
Cellular Automata for Research and Industry (ACRI 2018)

September 17, 2017
Villa del Grumello, Como, Italy

Cellular automata (CA) can be viewed as a mathematical abstraction of the
physical world in which all quantities are of discrete nature. Due to its
simplicity, CA turn out to be a very interesting approach to model complex
systems in which a macroscopic collective behavior emerges out of the
interaction of many simple elements. This school will indroduce this approach in
a pedagogical way through many examples illustrating the essence of CA modeling.

- Bastien Chopard
- Jean-Luc Falcone

The program of the school is the following:

- Introduction: What are CA's?: computational model, discrete dynamical system,
abstraction of physical and natural systems
- Definition: Parity rule. Neighborhood, stochastic CA, non-uniform CA,
asymchronous CA. Implementation: lookup table, on the fly computation. Number
of possible universe
- Historical notes: from von-Neuman to Langton self-reproduction CA
- Modeling of physical system: create a fititious world where conservation laws
and symmetries are preserved.
- Examples: snowflakes, excitable media, traffic models, lezard, homostatis, ...
- Understanding complex systems through CAs: life, Langton ants, Wolfram
complexity classes, ...
- Lattice gases: CA fluids, diffusion models, exact computation and
- Extension: lattice Boltzmann, multi-agent: in-silico modeling at a mesoscopic
- Exercises: will be inserted during the presentation

The Intensive School on CA will be held at Villa del Grumello, Como, Italy, on
the 17th of September 2018. The school is set one day before the beginning of
the 13th International Conference on Cellular Automata for Research and Industry
(ACRI 2018).

The registration fees for the school can be found at:

Details on the registration procedure will soon be posted on the same webpage

For PhD students of the University of Milano-Bicocca, participation to the
school is valid for 1 course credit (CFU)

Further information on the school will be published on the ACRI 2018 website:
