The University of Nottingham is inviting applications for a Software
Research Engineer to join our exciting collaboration with Optrak and
Lancaster University. Employed by the University of Nottingham, and based at
Optrak offices in Ware, Hertfordshire, you will take a central role in
delivering a project to develop advanced optimisation techniques for Vehicle
Routing and joining a professional Agile software development team.
This is an exciting opportunity for you to carry out a high-profile
Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project within a specific time frame,
fully supported by the University and Optrak. A key aspect of your role will
be to transfer the latest science-based research in (meta/hyper-heuristic)
optimisation to identify, implement and embed new technologies, practices
and processes into the company for commercial delivery. This is a new and
important role for Optrak, who are looking to enhance their logistics
optimisation software. You will engage with Optrak's customers, staff and
other logistics experts to help build the right products for Optrak and its
customers. Experience of working in a commercial environment and logistics,
in particular, would be highly desirable.
You should hold or be close to completion of an undergraduate (preferably a
postgraduate) degree or equivalent in computer science, artificial
intelligence, operational research or a related discipline. Candidates
without a computer science degree should have significant programming
experience.
As a proactive person and good communicator, you will be expected to manage
most aspects of your own work and to liaise directly with academic staff at
Nottingham and Lancaster and senior staff at Optrak, in addition to your
team colleagues at Optrak. Through the KTP, you will be given the support
and mentoring you need to nurture your talent.

Optrak (https://optrak.com/) specialises in Vehicle Routing and Scheduling
software and related consultancy. The company works primarily in the Scala
