[DMANET] PostDoc position E13 TV-L in CRC 1502 on HPC related to Geosciences

What: PostDoc position (100%) E13 TV-L (until December 2025, with the possibility of extension)
at the High Performance Computing & Analytics Lab (HPC/A-Lab, scientific director: Petra Mutzel) of University of Bonn (Germany)
in close cooperation with Forschungszentrum Jülich on Geosciences ( e.g., Institute of Bio- and Geosciences (IBG-3), Simulation & Data Lab Terrestrial Systems).

Main tasks: You work at the interface of HPC and Geoscience, and if interested also in Algorithmics and Data Science being part of the DFG-funded project "Collaborative Research Centre 1502: Regional Climate Change: Disentangling the Role of Land Use and Water Management" (speaker: Jürgen Kusche) and will be part of the CRC Z04 project, the central hub to support a variety of supercomputing tasks and participate in exciting and demanding large-scale Earth system simulations, as well as big data processing and analysis challenges. Your tasks include:

- Conducting and further developing an independent research project concerning, e.g., one or several of

-- HPC related tasks, e.g., various aspects of Earth system modelling,
-- participation in ongoing work on coupled (km-scale) continental-scale Earth system model simulations (with data assimilation), as well as research on water, energy and biogeochemical cycles and land-atmosphere coupling in an international research context
-- porting, setup, testing, scaling, profiling, and performance optimizations of numerical models; standard implementations, code maintenance; development of optimum configurations on the latest HPC systems at JSC including heterogeneous architectures towards pre-exascale capabilities
-- supporting and doing trainings for geoscientists in making optimum use of HPC with CRC model systems in collaboration with the CRC's Integrated Research Training Group
-- development and extension of new and existing parallel scientific software tools and workflows
-- possibility to work on model development and algorithms,
-- possibility to work on big data analytics with latest ML and deep learning methodologies

- Acquisition and application of scientific methods

- Providing basic HPC support to members of the CRC in close cooperation with JSC (allowing access on latest tier 0 HPC systems at Forschungszentrum Jülich)

- Publications, also jointly with members of the CRC 1502 (e.g. of scientific results)

- Acquisition of skills and experiences in project/research management

Your profile:

• Qualified Master with subsequent PhD degree in one or more of the following disciplines: computer science, meteorology, hydrology, applied mathematics, physics, environmental sciences, geosciences

• Experience and interest in HPC and in using numerical models, preferably in Earth system models
·
• Very good Linux skills, and proficiency in one or more scientific programming languages (C/C++/Fortran/Python/R);

· • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an international, interdisciplinary team across institutes

• Excellent command of English language

We offer:

• Integration and participation in a highly-motivated, interdisciplinary network

• flexible, employee-friendly working hours

• support for professional development and career management

• Institutional support for applicants with families and for women

• Depending on the applicant`s qualifications and the precise nature of the tasks salary scale E13 and social benefits in conformity with the provisions of the Collective Agreements for the Civil Service (TV- L at University of Bonn, TVöD at Forschungszentrum Jülich).
