[DMANET] NewPost

PhD position at Politecnico di Torino, Italy (Edoardo Fadda & Paolo Brandimarte) [Deadline: April 30, 2025]

The research program aims at the development of solution methods for
combinatorial optimization problems, with a particular emphasis on routing, within a stochastic framework. Since the scholarship is partially founded by the PRIN project SUPERSONIC one application to be considered is mid-haul logistics with electric vehicles (EVs).

The PhD candidate undertaking this research will have the opportunity to work at the intersection of operations research, transportation engineering, and artificial intelligence and will develop all the skills that enable to address real-world case studies. Furthermore, the candidate will collaborate with research groups at Politecnico di Milano and Università Politecnica delle Marche, the two partner institutions involved in the PRIN project.

In more detail, the research program comprises the following steps:
1. Acquiring the necessary theoretical background in optimization under uncertainty (integer programming and combinatorial optimization methods, both exact and approximate; decomposition methods; learning strategies, etc.).
2. Selecting the application fields and strengthening the specific domain knowledge.
3. Implementation of the solution strategies.
4. Definition of the testbed (possibly, in cooperation with the industry).
5. Computational experiments.

A research stay at a leading international research institution (research center or university) as a visiting researcher is planned during the program.

The call for applications is available at the following link: https://www.polito.it/en/education/phd-programmes-and-postgraduate-school/admissions-to-phd-programmes/admissions/call-for-applications

More information about the research topic can be found in this document: https://www.polito.it/sites/default/files/2025-03/borsa_scudo_25682.pdf or by contacting us at edoardo.fadda@polito.it; paolo.brandimarte@polito.it

To apply for the position, a background in computational optimization, operations research, and programming (Python and/or MATLAB) is required. Please note that you do not need to already hold a Master's degree at the time of application but it is sufficient to obtain it before November 2025.

The application deadline is April 30, 2025, and the contract will begin in Fall 2025.
