*Speaker*: *Steve Sain*, Jupiter Intelligence, Sr. Director, Geospatial and
Data Sciences
*Title*: *Data science and the assessment of climate risk *
*Abstract*: The study of the impacts of climate change has provided the
foundation for the emerging area of climate risk analytics. Applied
statistics and data science are playing a key role in quantifying the
impact of a changing climate on perils such as flood, heat, and fire. In
this talk, I will present an overview of climate risk analytics, focusing
on research areas such as extremes, emulators, and downscaling. I'll also
provide some examples of how companies and other organizations are using
climate risk analytics to help assess and manage climate change-related
risk.
*Bio*: Steve Sain is a Senior Principal Data Scientist and Senior Director,
Geospatial and Data Sciences. Prior to joining the team at Jupiter, Steve
held faculty positions in statistics and applied mathematics and worked in
industry as a data scientist where he led research and development programs
and data science teams. From 2006 to 2014, he was the head of the
Geophysical Statistics Project and a scientist in the Institute for
Mathematics Applied to Geosciences at the National Center for Atmospheric
Research in Boulder, CO. Steve has long worked at the intersection of
climate research and applied statistics, including a focus on spatial
methods for large datasets, extremes, uncertainty quantification, and
climate risk analytics. Steve is an affiliate faculty in the University of
Colorado's Department of Applied Mathematics, a fellow of the American
Statistical Association, and past recipient of the Distinguished
Achievement Award from the American Statistical Association's Section on
Statistics and the Environment.
Hope to see you all there!
