It is an international city on the Mediterranean sea, suspended between a glorious past of "Little Vienna by the Sea" and the cosmopolitan present. It is a Central European city, where you can breathe a multicultural atmosphere, visit historical cafés, art museums, and appreciate heterogeneous architecture and stunning sea. At the back of Trieste, the Karst plateau rises with a natural landscape of great beauty, scattered with typical villages and natural caves.
It ranks among the top Italian cities in terms of quality of life.
Trieste is also one of the cheapest cities in Italy in terms of living costs and rents.

The city of Trieste, European city of Science in 2020, is internationally known for its high concentration of researchers and scientific institutions of excellence.
The phd program in applied data science and artificial intelligence is an international doctorate course, taught in English, and it is offered by the University of Trieste, with the collaboration of researchers from other research institutions within the broader the Trieste area, among which SISSA (International School for Advanced Studies), ICTP (International Centre for Theoretical Physics), INAF (Astrophysics observatory), OGS (Oceanography and Geophysics institute), and Area Science Park (technological park and tech transfer).

Each position lasts 3 years, with a funded scholarship of a minimum of approximately 1.2k euros per month, and with 1.6k euros/year of travelling funds. Students can spend up to 18 months abroad, generally the first 12 months are covered by a 50% increase in the scholarship (some scholarship which have a fixed topic can have different rules for such salary increase).

The positions are project-based and are funded by research institutions, companies, or research projects.
