Thematic Einstein Semester
NETWORK GAMES, TROPICAL GEOMETRY, AND QUANTUM COMMUNICATION
The newly funded Berlin Mathematics Research Center MATH+ is a joint effort of the three Berlin universities - Freie Universität, Humboldt-Universität and Technische Universität - to advance application-oriented mathematics. In each semester the center organizes a thematic topic development program to foster innovative connections and collaborations between different branches of mathematics and related fields. The first thematic semester will focus on network games, tropical geometry, and quantum communication.
The Thematic Einstein Semester runs from April 15 to July 5, 2019. It features three specialized intensive courses (each 2 hours a week) aiming at leading the attendants to the state of the art of research in the relevant fields. The lectures are followed by a conference, taking place between June 3 and 7, 2019, with international experts presenting their research in invited lectures. After the conference, the lectures will continue in a seminar style format where small research projects will be solved. The research center invites applications for participation in the semester. The program is particularly suitable for talented PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. To support the interdisciplinary nature of the semester, each participant is expected to take part in the activities of at least two of the three involved fields. There is no participation fee. All participants are encouraged to stay for the entire duration of the semester. Long-term visitors who stay for at least four weeks can apply for housing support during their time in Berlin.
Each applicant should prepare the following documents in a single PDF file:
- A cover letter briefly describing your interest in the program, stating which of the three courses (network games, tropical geometry and quantum communication) you plan to attend, and whether you wish to apply for housing,
- a CV including a list of publications,
- a reference letter of at most one page by your PhD supervisor or postdoctoral mentor showing their support of your application,
- a research statement of at most one page.
The applications should be sent electronically in a single PDF file to myrna.selling@hu-berlin.de. The deadline for application is February 1, 2019.
