[DMANET] New SIAM SIAG on Applied & Computational Discrete Algorithms

I just wanted to draw attention to a new SIAM Activity Group that may be of
interest to dma-net subscribers, the SIAG on Applied & Computational
Discrete Algorithms.

Below is an open letter to the community from the SIAG Chair, Alex Pothen,
highlighting the SIAG's purpose, upcoming activities (including CSC20,
APOCS20, and a special plenary by David Shmoys at SODA20), and
opportunities for participating -- including a promo code for 25% off SIAM
membership! Note that SIAM Student Members can join two SIAGs for free.

----- Letter from the Chair ----

Dear Colleague,

2019 is the first year in existence for SIAM Activity Group on Applied and
Computational Discrete Algorithms! In the past 12 months, the SIAG has
taken several important first steps:

* Organized a list-serv for the SIAG at siam-acda@siam.org for members to
communicate with each other; Bora Ucar (ENS, Lyon, France) and Cindy
Phillips (Sandia National Lab, Albuquerque, NM) are the moderators. When
you join the SIAG as a member, you will be added to the list-serv.

* Sponsored the SIAM Workshop on Combinatorial Scientific Computing (CSC20)

being organized in Seattle, WA, Feb. 11-13, 2020. This will be co-located
with SIAM PP20

Sherry Li (Lawrence Berkeley Lab) and Martin Buecker (University of Jena,
Germany) are the Co-Chairs of the Program Committee. There is still time to
submit papers and talks! November 15 is the deadline for a second round of
submissions.

* Sponsored the new SIAM Symposium on Algorithmic Principles of Computer
Systems (APOCS20)
<http://www.mmsend49.com/link.cfm?r=vQCmso30zViIRLAbgw6kKQ~~&pe=9-Ery0goSuR9Qx_qrJJ1yPDisBpu9eiYa3jGsGOuanjWrmeCd2XIzw03sVK86wNJkqDTv8Wx-PHOQ6vLT5HyJA~~&t=QItHMo7Xd2PTR66TBR2tEA~~>
being organized for the first time in Salt Lake City, UT on Jan. 8, 2020.

We plan to keep the momentum going for 2020 by:

* Planning the organization of the first SIAM Conference on Applied and
Computational Discrete Algorithms (ACDA) in 2021. Current plans are to
co-locate the meeting with the SIAM Annual Meeting in July. The SIAM ACDA
conference will have both refereed papers published as a SIAM Proceedings
as well as talks selected from two-page abstracts. We will seek to bring
together diverse subcommunities of researchers whose work is representative
of applied and computational discrete algorithms.

* Sponsoring an invited plenary talk by David Shmoys (Cornell) as part of
an evening reception to introduce SIAG ACDA to the attendees of the SODA
cluster of conferences in January 2020 in Salt Lake City.

* Publicizing the SIAG to existing members of SIAM and recruiting new
members to SIAM and the SIAG by: writing articles in SIAM News and SIAM
Blogs; organizing minisymposia on ACDA topics at other SIAM Conferences in
2020; and, with your help, personal word of mouth from SIAG ACDA
members. Please tell your friends, others you meet at conferences on
relevant topics, and especially students, about our SIAG! You can follow us
on Twitter @siam_acda

.

* Creating best paper and best student paper prizes at the ACDA
conferences to recognize excellence in our community.

The SIAG/ACDA officers working with me: Blair Sullivan, Vice Chair (
sullivan@cs.utah.edu); John Gilbert, Program Director (gilbert@cs.ucsb.edu);
Cynthia Phillips, Secretary (caphill@sandia.gov); are providing leadership
and exemplary service to us in accomplishing these goals. All of us on the
leadership team welcome your suggestions for growing our community.

Here is how you can join the SIAG: Go to https://my.siam.org and login
with your SIAM account (if you are a SIAM member) or register (if you are
not a member of SIAM). Then click on the Addons tab on the top left of the
page, and you will see all the SIAM Activity Groups. Click on Applied and
Computational Discrete Algorithms, and then follow instructions. SIAM is
running a campaign where new members can join at 25% off using the code
MBNW20 in the shopping cart at the end.

Thank you for your time; feel free to contact me (apothen@purdue.edu) and
others on the leadership team, or SIAM's Membership Manager Tim Fest (
fest@siam.org) with any questions.

Sincerely,
Alex Pothen, Chair, SIAG/ACDA
