[DMANET] Post-doc Positions at Politecnico di Milano - Optimization of CLoud systems

Two Post-doc Positions at Politecnico di Milano
Dipartimento di Elettronica e Informazione
Dependable Evolvable Pervasive Software Engineering group

Start date: October 1st, 2012

Type of contract: Fixed term contract (CDD) for 12 months.
The contract can be extended up to 36 months.

Gross salary: 26,000-35,000 EUR according to the candidate
experience.

Subject: Model-driven design and QoS management for
Cloud-based applications

Politecnico di Milano is one of the Technical Universities
in Italy, it was established in 1863 and it is ranked as
one of the most outstanding European universities in
Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design. In many
disciplines it is regarded as a leading research
institution worldwide. The number of students enrolled in
all campuses is approximately 42,000. The DEpendable
Evolvable Pervasive Software Engineering (DEEP-SE) group
works within the Dipartimento di Elettronica e
Informazione (http://www.dei.polimi.it/). It has been
ranked among the "internationally excellent" groups in the
software engineering area by [Ren and Taylor, Commun. ACM
50, 6, Jun.2007]. This result has been recently confirmed
by an international peer review panel requested by
Politecnico di Milano.

The research activity of the DEEP-SE group
(http://deepse.dei.polimi.it/) focuses on techniques,
tools and frameworks for the development of complex
software systems. It encompasses a variety of aspects of
such systems, ranging from modeling and analysis issues in
the early phases of their development, to issues related
to their implementation and runtime management with
particular emphasis on autonomic middleware solutions and
resource allocation optimization. The group includes 16
faculties, 6 Post-docs, and 12 PhD students.

In this context, expressions of interest are being sought
for two Post-doc positions in the context of the
MODAClouds European Integrated project
(http://www.modaclouds.eu/), starting on October 1st 2012
and running for 36 months. MODAClouds is funded under FP7
obj. 1.2 and includes 10 partners (Politecnico Di Milano,
which is also the project coordinator; Stiftelsen Sintef,
Norway; Institutul E-Austria Timisoara, Romania; Imperial
College Of Science, Technology And Medicine, UK; Softeam,
France; Siemens Program And System Engineering Srl,
Romania; Boc Information Systems Gmbh, Austria; Flexiant
Limited, UK; Atos Spain S.A., CA Technologies Development
Spain S.A.). MODAClouds aims at mitigating the classical
problem of Cloud-vendor lock-in and at enabling the usage
of multiple Clouds as a way to tackle high availability
requirements, to increase performance, and to keep costs
under control. The solution proposed by MODAClouds is
based on model-driven development combined with novel
model-driven risk analysis and quality prediction. The
idea is to enable developers using MODAClouds technologies
to specify Cloud-provider independent models enriched with
quality parameters, implement these, perform quality
prediction, monitor applications at run-time, and optimize
them by implementing a closed loop. Furthermore, a
feedback loop between software design and the operational
systems will be also implemented with the aim to fill the
gap between run-time data and design-time models quality
predictions.

The successful candidates are expected to have a PhD
degree in a relevant field and a good publication record.
Experience in collaborative research projects  and in
supervising masters and undergraduate students will
constitute a preferential element. Expertise in one of the
following fields will be highly regarded: model driven
development, cloud computing, autonomic computing,
performance evaluation, optimization, and operations
research. The working language will be English, knowledge
of Italian is not required.

The position will be fixed-term for one year, renewable
for an additional period of two years. The starting date
is negotiable but should be around October 1st 2012.

Inquiries and expressions of interest, including a
curriculum vitae, a list of publications (with a shortlist
of the three most important papers), and an outline of
prospective research (no more than 2 pages) should be sent
by e-mail to Prof. Elisabetta Di Nitto and Dr. Danilo
Ardagna ({dinitto|ardagna}@elet.polimi.it).

Deadline for submissions: 31st of July 2012 (submissions
received after that date are welcome and will be
considered as long as the fellowship will be still
available).
