PhD position in Theoretical Computer Science at the University of Bonn

A full-time PhD position is available in

Theoretical Computer Science
at the University of Bonn, Germany.

The position is supported by the ERC Starting Grant "Algorithms beyond
the Worst Case (BeyondWorstCase)" for up to four years and it comes with
no teaching duties. The salary scale is TV-L E13 (100%).

The PhD candidate will contribute to the research in the project
BeyondWorstCase. The goal of this project is to narrow the gap between
theoretical analysis of algorithms and practical observations. For this,
we will explore novel methods beyond classical worst-case analysis.
Research can be performed within these and related areas:
* smoothed analysis of algorithms,
* clustering,
* statistical inference,
* experimental evaluation of algorithms.

The successful candidate should have a Master's degree in Computer
Science, Mathematics, or a related field. A solid background in
Theoretical Computer Science, Discrete Optimization, or Machine Learning
is preferred but not a must.

Please do not hesitate to send any questions to the email address given
below.

Please send your application (including curriculum vitae, copies of
certificates, and a letter of motivation) as well as a letter of
recommendation to the address below. Electronic submissions are highly
encouraged (please attach relevant documents as pdf).

The deadline for applications is July 15, 2012.
The letter of recommendation can be sent after the application, not
later than July 31, 2012.
