[DMANET] PhD course: Stochastic Programming with Applications in Logistics

*** Apologies for cross-posting ***

PhD course on Stochastic Programming with Applications in Logistics

May 27-31 2013, Aarhus University, Business and Social Sciences, Denmark

Lecturer: Prof. Stein W. Wallace, Norwegian School of Economics

Most important decisions are made under uncertainty. It is rare that everything relevant for a decision is known when the decision is made. Stochastic programming provides a powerful tool for modeling and analyzing complex decision problems facing an uncertain future (such as uncertain prices, demand, weather, quality ...). The course will primarily focus on understanding the role of uncertainty in mathematical programming. Why is it important? What can go wrong? Why do we care? Basic algorithmic structures will be discussed, but with no focus on implementations.

To understand the issues, it is best to look at specific cases and applications. We shall study stochastic network design, stochastic facility layout, as well as some interesting cases from other areas. We shall also study, to some extent, competing modeling frameworks and indicate what are their strengths and weaknesses.

Participation: The participation fee is DKK 2500 (EUR 350) and covers tuition, lunches and coffee breaks as well as a course dinner. Participation is limited and we therefore accept registrations on a first-come, first-served basis. Please register no later than 1 May 2013 to Susanne Christensen, sla@asb.dk.
